Potshot Boxing’s (PSB) Fight of the Week takes us back to November 8, 2003. The Great Roy Jones, Jr. got off to a great start in 2003, as he realized his dream of capturing a world heavyweight title. On March 1, 2003, Jones defeated John ‘The Quiet Man’ Ruiz to capture the WBA heavyweight title.
After capturing the WBA heavyweight title, a lot of the boxing world wanted to see Jones face off against ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson in a blockbuster showdown. It was a promise that Jones made at one of his press conferences, however, that caused him to put a potential Mike Tyson mega-fight on hold.
That promise was to a move back down to light-heavyweight to give a hungry for the limelight fighter Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver a shot at doing what no one else has done, beat him. (Jones only loss at the time was a disqualification against Montell Griffin so Griffin did not technically beat him. Besides, Jones knocked Griffin out in 1 round in their rematch.)
Now remember Boxing World, Roy Jones, Jr. had just moved up to heavyweight to capture the WBA heavyweight title. With that said, Jones had to shred muscle to come back down to light-heavyweight to fight Antonio Tarver. I am not making any excuses for the great Roy Jones, Jr., but I’m just sayin’.
Anyway, it was a great chess match that took place on November 8, 2003. You can check out Potshot Boxing’s (PSB) Fight of the Week: Roy Jones’ Jr. vs. Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver I here…..
