The Mecca of Boxing – Madison Square Garden witnessed one of the biggest upsets in Boxing history. ‘AJ’ Anthony Joshua was handed the first professional loss of his boxing career. The Boxing World will always remember June 1, 2019.

In the 3rd round of this fight, Joshua caught Ruiz, Jr. with a hard left hook that sent Ruiz, Jr. to the canvas. Ruiz got up from the left-hook and Joshua went in for the kill. Joshua got into trouble trying to go for the knockout as Ruiz caught him with a vicious counter left hook that sent Joshua to the canvas.
That beautiful counter left-hook by Ruiz changed this heavyweight fight forever. As round 3 was coming to an end, Ruiz landed some vicious combination punches on Joshua that sent Joshua to the canvas again. Joshua would beat the bell and round 3 ended.
Joshua tried to get his legs together in rounds 4 thru 7, but he just was not the same. Joshua did not have any gas left heading into the 7th round. In round 7, Ruiz knocked Joshua down 2 more times. The first knockdown in the 7th round came when Ruiz overwhelmed Joshua with a barrage of combination punches that had Joshua staggering to the canvas again.
Joshua would beat the bell. The second and final knockdown of the night came when Ruiz landed more combination shots on Joshua that sent him to the canvas. At this time, Joshua had lost his mouthpiece. As Joshua was standing in the corner after the second knockdown in the 7th round, Referee Michael Griffin asked Joshua to come forward.
Now it looked as though Joshua said he wanted to fight, but he looked unresponsive. At that point Referee Michael Griffin stopped the fight, and Andy ‘The Destroyer’ Ruiz, Jr. was awarded the 7th round TKO victory.
With the win Ruiz, Jr. captured the WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO heavyweight titles, thus, becoming the first Mexican heavyweight champion of the world.
Conclusion
Hopefully, this fight is a lesson for Joshua to not take a fighter lightly, and also improve his stamina. All credit to Andy Ruiz, Jr. He seized an opportunity of a lifetime and did not let it slip away.
After the fight, Joshua’s Promoter Eddie Hearn let the boxing world know that there is a rematch clause. With that said, Joshua will have to try and take his time in the rematch in hopes of getting the heavyweight straps back.

I’ve always felt that Joshua down fall would be his lack of conditioning he run out of gas to soon and it show with a well fit fighter, until he get his stamina and training in tack, he will lose again.
