Back in 1978, a fight between Stevenson and Ali almost happened. The Ali vs. Stevenson fight got set for October 26, 1978. Due to the politics between Cuba and America, this fight never happened. Ali vs. Stevenson would have been a great heavyweight fight.
Ali was past his prime heading into that fight but still in good shape to take on the younger Stevenson. At that time, Stevenson was in his prime, but he only fought in the amateurs for his entire boxing career. He is arguably the best Cuban amateur heavyweight in boxing history.
