April 12, 1997, marked a great HBO PPV showdown between 2 of the best Pound 4 Pound fighters in the sport at the time in Pernell Whitaker and Oscar De La Hoya. Heading into the fight, it was De La Hoya’s first trip into the welterweight division.
With that said, he wanted to pick on the biggest fish in the pond in the great Pernell ‘Sweat Pea’ Whitaker. Sweet Pea at the time was the best Pound 4 Pound Fighter in the sport, with Roy Jones, Jr. knocking at the door to take his crown.

The fight between De La Hoya and Whitaker was very entertaining as the Thomas & Mack Center boxing crowd in Vegas cheered at every punch that De La Hoya threw. De La Hoya missed a lot of punches in that fight. Heck he even got knocked down by Whitaker.
In the end, however, it was De La Hoya who got his hand raised as he was awarded the 12th round unanimous decision victory. With the win, De La Hoya lifted the WBC welterweight strap from Whitaker’s waist, and continued his legacy as the great ‘Golden Boy.’
