Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs) will head into the StubHub Center in Carson, California this Saturday night with visions of big name featherweight fighters dancing in his head because he knows if he can get past the power-punching veteran Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs) on tomorrow night, then a big name featherweight should be headed his way in the near future.
Mares will put his WBC featherweight championship on the line against Gonzalez. I will give Gonzalez a puncher’s chance in this fight as I expect him to try and produce a shocking knockout if the opportunity presents itself in the fight as he is a dangerous fighter that can knock a fighter out at any time during the fight.
Mares is known for applying a lot of pressure on his fighters, but in this fight I expect for Mares to try and box this powerhouse in Gonzalez and pile up the points as Gonzalez attempts to lay the boom on Mares in each and every round.
This is going to be a very interesting fight to watch. Mares is the favorite and should win this fight, unless if gets caught by one of those devastating power punches by Gonzalez, then all bet are off, and believe me, lately in boxing we have seen some nice upsets as of late.
In the end, this will be a fight whereas one fighter will try and go for the knockout as long as his stamina will allow, and another fighter who I feel will box and counterpunch to keep the power puncher off of his back. I will go with the boxer-counterpuncher in this fight.
Prediction: Mares by Unanimous Decision
