Boxing great Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker dies at age 55.

One of the greatest fighters in boxing history, Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker died on Sunday night at the age of 55. Whitaker was hit by a car while walking in an intersection in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Boxing World is in mourning right now as one of the best, if not, the best defensive fighter in boxing history dies. Gone too soon.

Whitaker was part of one of the best Olympic boxing teams in boxing history. That team was the 1984 Olympic boxing team. Whitaker won a gold medal during the 1984 Olympics and shared the stage with great fighters like Evander ‘Real Deal’ Holyfield, Tyrell Biggs, Meldrick ‘The Kid’ Taylor, and Mark Breland.

With the exception of Evander Holyfield who won a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics, the other fighters named above all won gold medals. During his professional boxing career, Whitaker held world titles in 4 different weight classes. After his professional boxing career, Whitaker was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.

Whitaker’s professional boxing record does not reflect what it should have been. Though Whitaker’s professional boxing record was a great one at 40 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, with 17 wins coming by way of knockout; Whitaker’s first professional loss of his boxing career to Jose Luis Ramirez should not have been.

Furthermore, we all know that the great Julio Caesar Chavez, Sr’s real first professional boxing loss came to the hands of Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker. Even Whitaker’s loss to ‘The Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya was questionable. The only true loss on Whitaker’s professional boxing record came to the hands of Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad.

With that said, Boxing World now is not the time for debating one of the greatest fighters in boxing history’s credentials, but it is time for celebrating this great icon of boxing. ‘Sweet Pea’ was one of the best Pound 4 Pound fighters of all-time. Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker was the reason why a lot of people fell in love with this great sport called Boxing.

Whitaker was fast, elusive, good punching power, and a credit to the sport of boxing. One of the very best all time in my opinion.
