Claressa Shields vs. Laila Ali? Shields is coming off of setting boxing history as the fastest fighter male or female to capture world titles in 3 different weight divisions. She has an undefeated boxing record of 10 wins, 0 losses, with 2 wins coming by way of knockout.
Why would Shields want to entertain a fight with former undefeated Women’s super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champion Laila Ali?
Money. Maybe that is the short answer. Laila Ali is undefeated and has big boxing accomplishments of her own as she was the first Women’s fighter ever to headline a pay-per-view event.
In that pay-per-view fight, she faced Jacqui ‘Sister Smoke’ Frazier-Lyde, the daughter of the late great heavyweight ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier.’ Laila is one of the best women’s fighters in boxing history. Her boxing record consists of 24 wins, 0 losses, with 21 wins coming by way of knockout.
Claressa ‘T-Rex’ Shields. Laila ‘She Bee Stingin’’ Ali. These two women have been going back and forth blasting each other in 2020. The trash-talking and disrespect between Shields and Ali have a fight starting to grow legs.
Claressa Shields is the current Women’s boxing Phenom. Laila Ali’s last fight was back in February of 2007 so she has not fought in 13 years.
At 42 years old, can Ali come out of retirement to beat one of the best Pound 4 Pound Women’s fighters in the sport today in Shields? The real question is should she? Even if Shields and Ali agree to fight each other, the fight would most likely be at super-middleweight given that Shields would be too small to meet Ali at light-heavyweight.
A Shields vs. Ali fight in 2020 is real. Shields is 24 years old which makes her 18 years younger than Ali. Shields will bring youth to the table in a potential fight, while Ali will bring power. Ali is willing to come out of retirement to fight Shields for 7 to 8 figures.
Another proposal that was put on the table was the winner of the fight will make 10 million dollars while the loser will get 5 million. That’s a lot of bread! These two proud competitors, however, will be fighting for more than money as their reputation and legacy will be on the line as well.
How much of a chance does Laila Ali at 42 years old have to beat Claressa Shields? This is a fight that the boxing world seems to want to see so it looks like we will all have to wait and see if this fight happens.
