Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence, Jr. took another step towards conquering the welterweight division as he literally walked through a really good fighter in Lamont ‘Havoc’ Peterson. Spence effectively cut off the ring on Peterson and banged him with vicious straights, body shots, and hooks.
Peterson had his moments in the fight as he was able to capitalize on Spence’s pressure with good counterpunching, but he simply could not hurt Spence. In the 5th round, Spence caught Peterson with a solid left hook that sent him to the canvas.
Peterson got up from the left hook and took more punishment from Spence. Peterson showed a lot of heart in the 5th as he was getting brutally beaten by Spence, but kept fighting and trying to land some big shots of his own on Spence.
In round 6, Spence continued to effectively back Peterson into the ropes and bang him with straights and unforgiving body shots. Peterson took a lot of punishment from Spence. So much punishment that his trainer Barry Hunter warned Peterson that he would stop the fight if he did not show him anything in the 7th round.
Well, nothing changed in the 7th round as Spence continued the one-sided beatdown on Peterson. Peterson just could not get out of the way of Spence’s hard straights and body shots. At the beginning of round 8, trainer Barry Hunter waved to the referee to stop the fight. The referee stopped the fight and Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence, Jr. was awarded the 8th round TKO victory, thus retaining his IBF welterweight title.
Conclusion
Spence walked through a really good Lamont Peterson. That’s impressive! Peterson was ready to fight until there was nothing left, but Trainer Barry Hunter did not want to see Peterson take any more punishment. Hunter, who is like a father to Peterson said that Peterson means more to him than Boxing.
With that said, that is why Hunter had the fight stopped. So, what’s next for Errol Spence, Jr.? Well, his next opponent will not be who a lot of the boxing world wants to see him fight in Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman. The 147 pound division is stacked though so Spence will have his share of worthy opponents to feast on moving forward in the boxing year of 2018.
