So just when Gervonta Davis was going to get a true test at junior lightweight, Abner Mares pulls out of the WBA junior lightweight title fight. Mares decided to pull out of the February 9, 2019 fight with Gervonta Davis due to an elbow injury he suffered during a sparring session.

Now Davis will be in a more of a stay-busy fight against Hugo ‘Cuatito’ Ruiz for his WBA junior lightweight title fight. Ruiz has won his last 3 fights leading up to his opportunity to replace Abner Mares to fight Davis for the WBA junior middleweight title.
Hopefully, Ruiz will prove to be more than just a stay-busy fight for Davis on February 9, 2019.
