Potshot Boxing’s (PSB) fight of the week takes us back to September 14, 2002. On this day, in front of a pumped Mandalay Bay boxing crowd in Las Vegas, Nevada, the ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar De La Hoya got one of the most satisfying wins of his professional boxing career when he stopped long-time foe ‘Ferocious’ Fernando Vargas.
This fight had a lot of twist and turns leading up to the fight as the bad blood between these 2 fighters grew stronger. The cause of most of the bad blood stemmed from Vargas questioning De La Hoya support for their fellow Mexican community.
Nevertheless, it was De La Hoya who got the better of the 2 fighters on September 14, 2002. In the 11th round, De La Hoya caught Vargas with an unforgiving left hook that dropped Vargas. All you saw after that was De La Hoya breaking out into a satisfying shuffle.
Vargas got up from the left hook, only to get stopped by a barrage of vicious combination punches from De La Hoya. The referee stopped the fight, and De La Hoya was awarded the 11th round TKO victory.
