Ward got #1 Pound 4 Pound consideration after Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, Jr. retired from boxing. Jones won world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight (not the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF or IBO cruiserweight titles), and heavyweight.
Ward won world titles at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight. Jones and Ward have decorated professional boxing careers that will make them shoe-ins for the International Boxing Hall of Fame one day. There was one particular weigh class, however, that Jones and Ward dominated during their great professional boxing careers.
That division is the super-middleweight division. From November of 1994 through October of 1996, Roy Jones, Jr. dominated every super-middleweight in his path. Jones started his 2-year super-middleweight reign by beating then-undefeated IBF super-middleweight champion James ‘Lights Out’ Toney.
In that fight, Jones cruised to a 12th round unanimous decision victory.
After that, Jones went on the knockout every opponent he faced in the super-middleweight division. Jones’ most notable destruction in the super-middleweight division was his win over Vinny ‘The Pazmanian Devil’ Pazienza.
In that fight, Jones was so dominant, that in one of the rounds, Pazienza did not land a punch on him. Andre ‘SOG’ Ward was also known for dominating super-middleweights. In 2009, Ward entered the Super Six World Boxing Classic that featured the top super-middleweights in the division.
The Super Six World Boxing Classic lasted through 2011, and Ward beat some of the best super-middleweights of this era. Fighters such as Mikkel ‘Viking Warrior’ Kessler, ‘King’ Arthur Abraham, and Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch were stiff competition Ward had to face.
Ward, however, dominated the Super Six World Boxing Classic and defeated Carl Froch to win the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament. Okay so let’s recap. Roy Jones, Jr. was dominant at super-middleweight from 1994 to 1996.
Andre Ward was dominant at super-middleweight from 2009 to 2011. Both fighters were in their boxing primes at super-middleweight. Who would win a super-middleweight dream fight between Roy Jones, Jr. and Andre Ward? Check out Potshot Boxing’s (PSB) latest boxing poll and vote!
