Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin has once again captured middleweight titles, but it was not easy. Sergiy ‘The Technician’ Derevyanchenko was floored in the first round of this fight. It looked as though Golovkin was going to walk through Derevyanchenko early. Derevyanchenko, however, got up from the knockdown and started to bang Golovkin to the body for the rest of the fight.
Derevyanchenko’s bodywork wore down Golovkin to the surprise of the Madison Square Garden boxing crowd. Golovkin looked seriously hurt in a fight for the first time ever. In his fights with Canelo Alvarez, Golovkin took some shots, but he did not look seriously in trouble.
In this fight with Derevyanchenko, Golovkin was backing up and on his bicycle trying to get away from some of those vicious body shots from Derevyanchenko. This fight was action-packed and close throughout. Golovkin head hunted, while Derevyanchenko was a body destroyer.
This great action-packed fight would go to the judges’ scorecards. All three judges scored the fight for Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin. As a result, Golovkin captured the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight titles. This fight could have gone either way.
You can make a case that Derevyanchenko’s bodywork was enough to get the nod. You can also argue that Golovkin’s first-round knockdown was the difference in which fighter was awarded the middleweight titles this past Saturday night.
