In his last crack at capturing a world title, Yordenis Ugas came up short in a close fight against Shawn ‘Showtime’ Porter. In that fight, Yordenis’s great jab and counter-punches caught the judges’ eyes.

In the end, however, it was Porter who escaped with the 12th round split-decision victory, thus, retaining his then WBC welterweight title. This past Sunday night, Yordenis Ugas got another crack at a welterweight title when he faced the rough and tough Abel Ramos.
In this fight, Ugas used his good jabs, body punching, and combinations to give Ramos fits. Ramos, on the other hand, did not back down from Ugas as he used his good aggression to land good shots on Ugas.
As the fight was coming to an end in round 12, Ramos landed a hard-left hook that stunned Ugas. Ugas, however, managed to shake off the good left-hook that was landed by Ramos, and the bell for round 12 sounded.
This back and forth affair came down to the judges’ scorecards. Judge Lou Moret scored the fight 117-111 for Ramos. Judges Edward Hernandez, Sr. and Zachary Young scored the fight 115-113 for the winner, and new WBA (Regular) welterweight champion of the world, Yordenis Ugas!
Finally, Yordenis Ugas gets the nod in a close championship fight. There were a lot of boxing fans and critics who felt that Ugas should have gotten the nod against Shawn Porter when those two fought.
Now that Ugas is a champion, what’s next for him? Should he fight Shawn Porter in a rematch? Maybe he can fight the winner of Spence vs. Garcia. No matter what happens, all roads lead to Yordenis Ugas having a bright future in the welterweight division.
